6 Signs Your Pool Liner Needs Replacing

Your vinyl liner does a lot of work. It holds the water, protects the pool structure and sets the whole look of your backyard. But sun, weather and pool chemicals take a toll over time, and every liner eventually needs to be replaced. Here’s how to tell when yours is ready.

1. Fading

Fading is often the first sign of an aging liner. The pattern looks washed out, especially above the waterline where the sun hits it most. Fading on its own is mostly cosmetic, but it usually means the vinyl is getting older.

2. Wrinkles That Won’t Go Away

Wrinkles on the floor or walls can happen as a liner ages or loses its stretch. A few small wrinkles may not be urgent, but large or growing wrinkles are worth having looked at.

3. Leaks and Water Loss

If you’re adding more water than usual, your liner could have a tear or a small hole. Some leaks can be patched, but if the vinyl is older or has several problem spots, a new liner is often the better long-term fix.

4. The Liner Is Pulling Out of the Track

Your liner hangs from a track along the top of the pool wall. When an older liner shrinks or loses its flexibility, it can slip out of that track. That’s a clear sign it’s time to talk about a replacement.

5. Stiff, Brittle or Stretched Vinyl

New vinyl is soft and flexible. Older vinyl can feel stiff or brittle, and you may notice it stretching around steps, corners and fittings. Brittle vinyl is more likely to tear.

6. You Want a New Look

Sometimes the liner is fine, you’re just ready for a change. A new liner pattern is one of the easiest ways to make your whole backyard feel new again, from light and tranquil tones to rich, deep blues.

What Does Liner Replacement Look Like?

At Chaffee’s, we always measure your pool in person before ordering, so your new liner fits correctly. From there, you choose your Latham liner pattern and thickness, and we coordinate the full job: draining, removing the old liner, installing the new one and refilling the pool. We replace liners on vinyl liner pools whether or not we built the original pool.
